The Majestic Oak by the Court Tower
In celebration of Earth Day, we reflect on the importance of nature and the vital role it plays in preserving our history. In the heart of Maribor, next to the historic Court Tower, stands an ancient oak tree that has not only witnessed centuries of events but also embodies the resilience of nature amidst urban development. Known as the Majestic Oak, this tree is one of the oldest and thickest in the city, with an estimated age of at least 200 years, and possibly much older.
A Symbol of Resilience and Natural Heritage
The Majestic Oak is located in an area that was once enclosed by medieval city walls, leaving little room for green spaces. Yet, this tree has endured. It is believed to have been growing when the city walls still stood, making it one of the few natural survivors from that era, alongside the famous Old Vine in Maribor. With a trunk measuring 481 cm in circumference and standing over 25 meters tall, the oak represents more than just an old tree—it’s a symbol of the bond between nature and history.
This oak has witnessed important historical events, including the fire that ravaged the Judgment Tower in 1937. Its longevity and resilience make it a living witness to Maribor’s past and a testament to the power of nature to survive through even the most challenging times.
