About the cemetery
West Norwood Cemetery is one of the 'Magnificent Seven' metropolitan cemeteries founded to deal with the expanding population of London in the early 19th century. It was opened in 1837.
It has 69 nationally-important structures, including the Grade II and Grade II* memorials to the Victorian 'domestic godess' Mrs Beeton, ceramicist Sir Henry Doulton, banker James William Gilbart, Dr William Marsden, news Baron Julius de Reuter, charismatic preacher Charles Spurgeon and sugar millionaire and art patron Sir Henry Tate. Its landscape includes ancient trees from the Great North Wood that gave Norwood its name.
The Friends of West Norwood Cemetery lead general tours on the first Sunday of every month. No booking is necessary.
There are booklets and guide maps to describe notable people buried in the cemetery available in the cemetery office Monday-Friday.
