The Monumental Cemetery of Verona, designed by architect Giuseppe Barbieri, was built in neoclassical style starting from 1828.
The cemetery has the shape of a large square enclosure interspersed, in the midpoint of each side, from buildings with a circular plan, called Pantheon, which respectively house the entrance, the church, the remains of the illustrious Veronese and the memories of the benefactors of the city.
Because of the great demographic expansion, since the late nineteenth century the space was not enough, so in 1910 the cemetery was expanded with the construction of a new wing. Furthermore, in the 1930s, the Ossuary Shrine dedicated to the fallen of the Great War and the Garden Cemetery were built.
The Monumental Cemetery of Verona provides interesting examples of funerary sculpture and hosts illustrious tombs, such as that of the scholar Ippolito Pindemonte, the poet Berto Barbarani, the writer Emilio Salgari and the futurist artist Umberto Boccioni.
