Prešernova street is nowadays the central street of the old town and it is connected with Slovenian square. It is named after France Prešeren - a poet who wrote Slovenian anthem. Once, together with Slovenian square Prešernova street has formed an important trade street. Street runs from Slovenian square to the Dominican monastery and in a slightly bow wrap the castle hill. Most of the building on the street are from Middle Ages - the most preserved house on the street is a "Bratoničeva house". On the end of the Prešernova street you can see the Small castle - one also named as Upper court - and has the defence task.
Because in a past a market was located on that location, Prešernova street is in some medieval documents named as a square. But the street also had several other names. In 16. century people build a place to store the cereals right next to the City tower - and because of that the street was called a Cereal street. Until the end of the World war I. people use to name it as noble street, because a lot of famous and rich people use to live on that street.
On that street you are also able to see the oldest and still preserved house - house with a number 4. When the building was renovated in the previous century workers discovered the traces of Roman plaster and reconstruct it.
