How a poor boy became wealthy
In the fall of 1591 a 10 years old boy from Lugan (Italian part of Swiss) came in Ptuj in order to make some money for his winter clothes. His name was Franc Guffante. Because he wasn't used of child weather he got sick very soon. Already in the first year of living in Ptuj he had a fiver. Minorite guardian Octavianus Lombardus, Italian by birth, found him almost dead. He carried him in a house next of his and gave him a clean bed and took care for him. When the owners of the house changed the boy they found in his clothes a small pouch in which he had 7 shillings and a rosary. Guardian promised to the owners of house where the boy staid a big reward.
A boy recovered very fast and the guardian took him to the monastery. Boy wanted to be a monastery hired man and help around in th monastery in order to thank to the guardian for all his help. That made a strong impression on a guardian and he decided to take care for a boys better future.
After some time guardian went to a Matija Strainer - the wealthiest man in the town, who was a widow and didn't had any children and explain him a story about a poor boy. Guardian said that it would be a waste if a boy wouldn't have any parents and raise without a education. As guardian expected - Strainer took the boy to him self. The guardian offered to teach the boy how to read, write and calculate.
Later on Franc Guffante - once a small boy achieved with his fairness, loyalty and diligence that Strainer gave him his wholesaling.
After Strainer died Franc Guffante became a heir of all Strainers property. Since then Guffante have run the business under his own name. But he was very well aware that he have to thank to the minorite for everything that happened in his life. Because of that he donate a lot of money to the monastery and to the church.
Guffante family was according to the history record actually on of the biggest trade families on the Ptuj's area. But unfortunately family Guffante doesn't exist any more.
