Sofia Kowalevski (1850-1891)

Here rests Russian born and widely acclaimed mathematician Sofia Kowalevski. Born in 1850 to an aristocratic family in Moscow Sofia showed early on great mathematical abilities. She was permitted to study privately with a German professor since women at that time were not accepted into higher education.

Sofia excelled in academics and was a pioneer for women in mathematics becoming the first woman ever appointed to a full professorship in Europe at Stockholm University. Sofia died after contracting pneumonia in 1891 at the age of 41.
