Nils Erik LIEDHOLM - Born in Valdemarsvik (Sweden) on October 8, 1922. Died in Cuccaro Monferrato (AL) on November 5, 2007.
Nicknamed "the baron", he is considered one of the greatest European footballers of all time. He began his career with his hometown team and moved to the ranks of Norrkoeping in 1946. He arrived in Italy in '49, going to play for Milan, a team with which he played for 12 seasons, forming the famous "Gre-No-Li" with his compatriots Gunnar Gren and Gunnar Nordhal. As a player, as well as captain, of the Rossoneri team, he totaled 394 appearances making 89 goals by winning 4 badges. With the Sweden national team he won the gold medal at the 1948 London Olympics, and came in second place at the 1958 World Cup. He retired as a player in 1961, began his coaching career, sitting on the benches of Milan, Verona, Monza, Varese, Fiorentina, Rome, the latter team that will lead to the 1983 championship, having already won it by training Milan in 1979. Married to the countess Maria Lucia Gabotto di Sangiovanni, he owned a farm in Cuccaro Monferrato with his wife , the country in which he dies at 85.
