My views of Genova
As if the city actually shouldn't work. But it works. And it's cool.
Arriving to Genova with shuttle service is an adventure by itself. Round and round you go to end up somewhere in the port. Without experienced driver it would take a few hours more I guess since the directions signs do not seem to have a particular reason.
Purpose of signs is actually questionable everywhere around. Getting out of port was a guess I should use the stairs game that ended up well. As all of the other English speaking stranger (that's me) events.
While it is not easy to actually understand each other (most speak Italian, some speak Etalish), they are helpful and patient. But I will learn more Italian for future visits. :)
Walking around Genova for few hours with a camera is tricky. While you will get perfect setting and light in some piazzas or amazing views from hills, most of the time you will walk narrow shadow streets where there is just too many interesting details to shoot in bad lighting conditions.
But each street is worth it. Seems like this city escaped the requirements of modern brands and still belongs to locals. No, you will not get perfectly polished up walls and for most of the time you will not know where you are exactly. Aproximately near one or other end of the old city.
Yet again why care? Time in Genoa is not of that importance. Around 1pm it's time for lunch. Rest of the clock is for knowing which way to move.
In case you don't know, you will learn that Columbo was born here. And Genoa is the true multi cultural city that does not know strangers unless strangers behave strange. Be yourself and be surprised. That's how they like it.
Whatever the time, Genoa is so worth of visit and getting lost. Especially in the evening when ligths turn on and dark streets get that romantic mediteranian sense. Small shops offering local art, toys, food, wine (that's food actually) or souvenirs. And if you are lucky (have great friends) on Friday evening you might actually catch some table without reservation in the pub or restaurant. Do not be suprised by the price of the drinks though, most of the time they may include some snack. :)
What impresses the most? If you can forget the marvelous architecture and monuments of old city and pretend you did not notice that legendary biggest open door museum of Staglieno, you have a chance to say that cityscape is something out of this world. Like somebody was Photoshopping it and put together things that shouldn't be together. And as if the city actually shouldn't work. But it works. And it's cool.
