Mali grad chapel

Mali grad chapel

On the hill in the middle of the town, a castle complex was built in the 11th century.
It is named »Mali grad« (Little Castle) and back then represented the seat of the Counts of Andechs from Bavaria. What remained of the complex is the two-storey Romanesque chapel with the crypt. The chapel is one of the most important Kamnik's cultural and historical attractions and represents a unique example of this type of architecture in Slovenia.

Despite the later Gothic and Baroque alterations, the chapel has kept its Romanesque core. The crypt is carved into the rock, the middle chapel is dedicated to St. Eligius, the patron saint of blacksmiths, while the upper chapel was originally dedicated to St. Bartholomew, and later to the Mother of God.

The hill provides a beautiful view of the town and the Kamnik Savinja Alps. The castle is also linked to the legend of stingy countess Veronika, who is still guarding a treasure in the ruins of Mali grad, waiting for her savior.

Today Mali grad chapel is a popular venue for many different events.
