The Franciscan Friary

The Franciscan Friary

The Franciscan Friary was built next to the initially gothic Church of St. Jacob at the end of the 15th century, which was then rebuilt in the 18th century into its present appearance.
The church keeps the relics of St. Primus and Felician, which were brought here from a remote mountain church above Kamnik. The interior of the church was painted by a painter from Kamnik, Stane Cuderman. Furthermore, the church is adorned with carved statues produced by the former woodcarving workshop, which operated within the friary. The greatest asset is the Chapel of Holy Sepulchre, which is full of symbolism. It is considered one of the last works of renowned architect Jože Plečnik. According to the Franciscans “a friary without a library is like a fortress without the armory”. The Franciscan Library in Kamnik is very valuable since it keeps about 3,000 volumes of books printed before 1799, among them are also the incunables - books that had been printed prior 1550s. The most famous books are the complete edition of the Bible of Jurij Dalmatin with a preface from 1584 and the Pentateuch from 1578.
