The mayor isn't always right

The mayor isn't always right

The story from 19th century.
When a man named Leckner was a mayor of Ptuj people lived in fear because of a ramshackle bridge. Their wooden bridge was in very bad condition and the people were very well aware that if they lose the bridge they will lose the contact with other side of the river - from where they got the most of the food and other things they needed for surviving. Municipal councillors spoke a lot about that problem. Every year they tried to fix the bridge and change some pillars but they have never replaced it with a new one.

The biggest opponent of building a new bridge was actually a mayor Leckner, who always said that the city doesn't have enough money and they can't jeopardize the city treasury. Despite the fact that the bridge was really in very bad condition and all expert tried to build a new one, the mayor didn't allow them to.

But dr. Körner, a man who had a big respect in the city claimed together with his supporters that building a new bridge wouldn't cost more than fixing the old one. "We should build an iron or at least concrete pillars and a wave breaker in front of the bridge", claimed dr. Körner. But after all the mayor staid on his statement and didn't allow to jeopardize the city treasury in order to built a new bridge.

And on one day in October a water demolished the pillar that was the most solid from all. The bridge was so damaged that it could collapse in any moment. People had to close it and the city lost a contact with other side of the river. After that people barely fixed the bridge just for transportation. Then city had to take a credit to built a new bridge and after all the city paid much more as they had if they built the new bridge in the first place. So Dr Körner showed to the mayor that he isn't always right.
