On the spot where today a Dominican monastery is located once a Roman civil center was located. The first monks that settled on the area of Ptuj and nowadays Slovenia were Dominicans, who have got a land by the widow of Friderik III. on the east part of town - right under the Castle hill. Supposedly they started to built a monastery at that time. First the built the monastery only until the second floor. The monastery had a shape of a cross hall (corridor), which was first compose out of south and more prominent east section. In 13. Century the monastery was ruined by the fire - the renovation was long-lasting, because they were able to renovate it completely no earlier than in the middle of 14. Century. In that time they were also able to built a west section of the cross hall and painted its east wall as well.

Monastery was several time renovated, no earlier than in 17. Century it gets a baroque look. In next Century they finally complete the renovation of the monastery into the baroque building - they covered it with a rich moulding and decorated it with several statues.

Monks lived in the monastery up until 1785 when a monastery was closed by the Joseph's reforms. In 1926 community bought it and opened a museum in it. The monastery is still used as the museum. Inside the monastery II., IV. and V. Mitra temple is located. Mithraism is a Persian religion that was brought in Ptuj by Roman soldiers.
