A sea arch. A heart.

A sea arch. A heart.

This is one of the most emblematic and beautiful beaches of Portugal, and considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world.
In 1998, it was also awarded with the distinguished "Golden Beach" award by the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment because of its outstanding natural qualities. This beach is not only famous for its beautiful cliffs, but also for the high quality of the water.

Furthermore, many pictures of this beach have often been used in promotional material and "Guides of Portugal" distributed around the world. From a certain point on the cliff top you can see how the sea arches create a beautiful image of a heart.

Activities on the beach
Wide meandering steps take you from the cliff top car park to the beach below. At high tide the beach is a narrow strip of sand, but at low tide the adjacent coves become accessible. It is a hit with families as there are plenty of strange rock formations to explore, caves cut in the cliffs and many rock pools harbouring all sorts of marine life.

The water quality and clarity here is really exceptional, making the beach ideal for snorkelling. Many different marine species can be spotted in the waters here. There is a snack bar on the beach, open during the summer months, meaning you can quite happily spend an entire day here.
