Choosing the Path: The Happy Map Approach
Open gallery
When developing ARTOUR, we intentionally chose not to include a “take me there” functionality. While knowing how to reach a destination (like a point of interest) is certainly useful, we believe that exploring the world should be a more immersive experience. Here are a couple of reasons why:
1. Explore with All Your Senses
As a tourist, the joy of discovery comes from engaging with your surroundings, not fixating on a mobile screen. We want our users to experience the sights, sounds, and sensations of a place rather than just following a digital path.

2. Alternative Tools Are Available
If you find yourself genuinely lost, there are countless other navigation tools and apps that can guide you to your destination. Our goal is to enhance the journey, not dictate it.
The Concept of Happy Maps
Recently, we’ve come across an intriguing idea known as “Happy Maps.” These emphasize that the most beautiful experiences often lie off the quickest routes. A wonderful video by Daniele Quercia delves into this concept, showcasing how taking the scenic route can lead to unexpected delights and memorable moments.
