Some 3.000 people who died in 2nd world war are burried in cemetery Pobrežje. They were from 27 countries.
Among deadliest days was the winter between 1941 and 1942 when some 1895 Russian soldiers lost their lives in nearby camp. Most of them died during winter running contest organized by camp commander. They had to run almost naked, starved and during the run they fail from exhaustion.
During the war victims from 26 other countries were burried in Pobrežje cemetery, including soldiers from both allies and axis side.
Cemetery changed in years after the war and most of the victims were transferred to the burial ground beneath this monument.
Monument was raised and opened in 2011 in a ceremony visited by highest ranking officials in Slovenia from all the countries.
